"Ronin were leaderless Samurai warriors. When a Samurai's master died, the warrior was supposed to commit suicide. Those who failed to do so suffered great loss of status and prestige. To survive, these Ronin fought for whoever paid them or they turned to banditry. Many Ronin became bodyguards for merchants and their caravans, where they would defend their charges against other Ronin. Although not as well-equipped as Samurai, Ronin were still highly-trained fighters with sword and spear."
